About Us

Who we are, where we come from, and where we're headed as a church family

Who we are

The Salem Presbyterian Church is a caring, nurturing community of faith that's over 200 years old. Members come from diverse backgrounds to worship and explore faith together, and connect with each other in meaningful ways. We support one another through challenging times, and celebrate with each other in times of joy.

If you are new to Salem Presbyterian, you will find information about where we are located, what to expect, and where to park on the Plan a Visit page. Our congregation is currently meeting for worship both in-person and over the phone. If you'd like to join us for worship over the phone, please contact us and we will get you the information to attend.

Where we come from

Salem Presbyterian Church was founded August 14, 1817. Now located at 110 N. High Street in Salem, Indiana, the building was started in 1839 and completed in 1842. In 1956, a small education building replaced the former church manse.

Over the years, the congregation's faithful care of the beautiful old building has been a reflection of their loving care and nurturing of each other. While our congregation has never been large, through the decades, countless families have loved this church and worshiped in its Sanctuary.

Salem Presbyterian was the first church in the local community to have a female pastor, in 1979. We became a Matthew 25 church in 2021, making a commitment to three areas of focus: building congregational vitality, dismantling structural racism, and eradicating systemic poverty. All are welcome regardless of personal history, family background, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression.

Where we're headed

What's the bottom line? More than ever, Salem Presbyterian Church is committed to support our church family and community in fostering growth in the Christian faith, in leading meaningful lives, and in doing good works to the glory of God... ”to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God.” And as we move forward as a church family, inclusion and belonging remain at the center of who we are as followers of Christ.
